Draft Standards

Dear Stakeholder

Today the Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, announced that DPI will start again on the development of draft welfare Standards and Guidelines for Pet Shops and Breeders of dogs and cats.

DPI has committed to a renewed approach for this process, including undertaking more meaningful consultation with stakeholders to make sure we are getting the balance right.

The Minister has also announced we will be appointing a Chief Animal Welfare Officer to help reshape how we work with our stakeholders and drive engagement in this area.

To enable this to happen as fast as possible, an interim Chief Animal Welfare Officer is to be appointed while we undertake recruitment for this newly created role.  I will advise of progress on this later this week.
NSW DPI continues to be absolutely committed to providing the appropriate structures and legislative frameworks to support strong animal welfare outcomes in NSW.
